Selangor Sets 80-Gold Target For SUKMA 2026

Selangor: Selangor is targeting 80 gold medals at the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) that the state will be hosting in August. State Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said that athletics and swimming are two of the sports from which they hope to rake in the gold medals.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Najwan emphasized that the preparations for the games are progressing well. He noted that the focus is not only on SUKMA athletes but also on those participating in Para SUKMA. The aim is to ensure that the training and performance levels of Para SUKMA athletes match those of their able-bodied counterparts, to prevent any sidelining of the para athletes. Najwan made these remarks during the launch of the Selangor SUKMA and Para SUKMA 2026 Volunteer programme, which was also attended by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

At the 2024 SUKMA in Sarawak, Selangor finished third in the overall standings with a total of 181 medals, comprising 56 golds, 64 silver medals, and 61 bronzes. Najwan also reported that the preparations for hosting the 2026 Games have reached 80 percent completion, with all venue upgrades finished ahead of schedule.

Currently, Selangor awaits the completion of upgrades at two major facilities: the Darul Ehsan Aquatics Centre in Section 13 and the Subang Shooting Range. The 2026 SUKMA is scheduled for August 15-24, with the official opening ceremony at the Sepang International Circuit. The Selangor Para SUKMA will follow from September 5-10.

The games will feature a total of 474 events across 27 sports, contested in nine districts and involving 52 competition venues. For Para SUKMA, 316 events in 10 sports will take place in the districts of Petaling and Klang.
