Selangor Government to Speed Up Pig Farm Relocation to Bukit Tagar

Shah alam: The Selangor government has announced plans to expedite the relocation of pig farms in Kuala Langat and Sepang to a modern livestock centre in Bukit Tagar, Hulu Selangor, by the year's end. This move aims to tackle pollution issues and promote environmental sustainability in the long term.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, State Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim revealed that the relocation plan was discussed during a briefing with the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, at Istana Bukit Kayangan. The initiative involves 202 hectares of land in Bukit Tagar and seeks to address enduring problems related to odour, water pollution, and public disturbances through a more systematic approach.

Izham emphasized that the relocation is vital for controlling African Swine Fever (ASF) with a modern and controlled farming system. It also aims to ensure food security for the non-Muslim community without compromising environmental sustainability. Sultan Sharafuddin stressed the importance of managing food supply sustainably to prevent environmental harm.

Izham further explained that the plan includes setting up modern, closed-system pig farms away from residential areas, featuring buffer zones and a zero-emission waste management system. This system will convert waste into biogas for electricity, following a model used in Penang. He stated that the issue should not be politicized, highlighting the state government's commitment to solving pollution and protecting community well-being.

The Sultan had previously expressed disappointment with the state's plan to allow pig farming in Tanjong Sepat, Kuala Langat, earlier this year, before their scheduled relocation to Bukit Tagar in 2030.
