Selangor Government to Assess Non-Muslim Funeral Service Affordability

Shah alam: The Selangor government is set to review the management of funeral service packages for non-Muslims to ensure that charges remain reasonable and accessible for bereaved families and their next-of-kin. This initiative aims to provide equitable access to funeral services, particularly focusing on affordability for all societal levels, including the low-income B40 group.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, State Investment, Trade and Mobility Committee chairman Ng Sze Han, who also leads the special committee on Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism, and Taoism (LIMAS), stated that the matter would be discussed in detail with relevant stakeholders. He emphasized the implementation of public crematorium facilities to ensure affordable cremation services. Additionally, local authorities plan to collaborate with the private sector to offer more affordable rates for residents in need.

Ng addressed these issues during the Selangor state assembly sitting, responding to a query from R. George Gunarajah (PH-Sentosa) regarding the development and accessibility of crematoriums in Selangor for all groups, including the B40. He also mentioned that the state government had instructed all local authorities to identify suitable sites for new crematoriums to accommodate the growing population. However, site selection faces constraints due to proximity to residential and commercial areas.

Currently, Selangor has eight public crematoriums, with facilities located in Shah Alam, Klang, Petaling Jaya, Sepang, and Subang Jaya. Two additional crematoriums are under construction in Kuala Langat and Hulu Selangor. Ng highlighted the Khairat Darul Ehsan (KDE) programme as an initiative to ease funeral arrangements, offering RM1,000 in cash assistance to individuals aged 50 and above and persons with disabilities (OKU).
