Kuching: Sarawak Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah announced that all 17 sports in the Sarawak cluster for the 2027 SEA Games will be held exclusively in Kuching. The decision was made by the 2027 SEA Games Organising Committee to ensure that logistical factors, suitable accommodations, connectivity, and international-class sports facilities are adequately provided for the regional-scale event.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Malaysia is set to host the 2027 SEA Games from September 18 to 29. The games will be divided into four main clusters, namely Sarawak, Penang, Johor, and Kuala Lumpur, with Sarawak serving as the main cluster. Kuching will host the opening ceremony and all 17 sports in the Sarawak cluster, which include aquatics, weightlifting, basketball, bowling, field bowling, e-sports, gymnastics, golf, cricket, archery, shooting, muay thai, petanque, squash, taekwondo, tennis, and wushu.
Minister Abdul Karim emphasized that while other cities in Sarawak could host national-level sports events, the scale and requirements of the SEA Games necessitate concentrating the events in Kuching. This centralization aims to streamline operations and provide optimal facilities and conditions for the athletes and officials participating in the games.
