Sarawak Premier Dismisses AmBank Stake Acquisition Report as Speculation

Kuching: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has dismissed a report claiming that the state intended to acquire a stake in AMMB Holdings Bhd (AmBank Group) to merge with Affin Bank Bhd, labeling it as mere speculation. He clarified that no state government representative had been sent to discuss the matter with AmBank Group.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abang Johari humorously remarked on the situation, likening it to a proposal without the necessary prior consent. He expressed surprise upon reading the report, reiterating that the claims were speculative and that he had no knowledge of the situation. These comments were made during his attendance at the RECODA Raya Rindok event organized by the Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA).

While refuting the specific claims of the report, Abang Johari mentioned that Sarawak remains open to negotiations with any entity interested in collaborating with the state government. The initial report alleged that Sarawak, as the largest shareholder of Affin Bank, was engaged in discussions with AmBank Group regarding a potential merger and had reached out to AmBank founder Tan Sri Azman Hashim to express interest in acquiring his stake in the group.
