Sarawak Poised to Back Trans-Borneo Railway Initiative – Abang Johari

Bintulu: The Sarawak state government has expressed its readiness to support the proposed Trans-Borneo Railway project, aimed at enhancing transportation connectivity and boosting logistics efficiency between Sabah and Sarawak. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that the state has already prepared a preliminary alignment for the project, which will be refined in collaboration with the Federal Government before implementation.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Premier Abang Johari revealed that the Federal Government is also ready to endorse the project, known as the Pan Borneo Railway. Initially, the focus will be on developing the railway within Sabah and Sarawak, before exploring a government-to-government (G2G) extension with Indonesia.

Abang Johari proposed that the project commence in stages, beginning with the Bintulu-Kidurong route. This particular stretch is prioritized due to the heavy cargo traffic it handles, which has the potential to impact road conditions adversely. The proposed railway system is anticipated to alleviate road congestion and provide a more effective solution for transporting heavy loads within Sarawak's crucial industrial zones.

The Premier emphasized that while there are no current issues with the railway corridor, the intention is to start on a smaller scale. Transport Minister Anthony Loke previously mentioned in a Facebook post that the final feasibility study report for the project is expected to be completed by mid-year. He highlighted that although the project might take decades to fully realize, it is essential to commence long-term planning to establish a solid foundation for future development.

The Trans-Borneo Railway project envisions connecting Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei, and Kalimantan, Indonesia, thereby fostering enhanced regional connectivity.
