Sarawak: Sarawak is set to allocate approximately RM6 billion by 2030 for rural water supply projects, announced Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. The initiative involves the construction of a water supply grid, including water treatment plants and the replacement of old pipes.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Premier Abang Johari stated that the project has commenced under the people’s project, with an initial allocation of RM4 billion. An additional RM600 million is expected to be included under the 13th Malaysia Plan. The cost for replacing old pipes to prevent bursting is estimated at RM1.1 billion. These details were shared with reporters after the launch of the Batang Lassa Bridge in Daro.
The Batang Lassa Bridge, a 2,430-metre-long structure connecting Daro to Pulau Bruit, is a significant part of Sarawak’s coastal road project, valued at nearly RM600 million. Construction of the bridge began on March 22, 2019, and it is expected to be completed by January 9, 2025. The bridge aims to enhance land access for rural residents, especially those who previously depended on ferry services to cross the Batang Lassa River.
Abang Johari emphasized the substantial funding required for infrastructure development. In his earlier speech, he highlighted that the completion of the Batang Lassa Bridge would act as a catalyst for development in Daro. Additionally, the upcoming construction of the Batang Paloh Bridge, which will connect Pulau Bruit to Serdeng next year, is anticipated to provide road access to the entire Rajang Valley, fostering various economic opportunities.
He urged the youth in Daro to leverage these developments by engaging in new economic sectors and embracing digitalisation to support their endeavors. He encouraged them to look beyond the local market and use the internet to market their products internationally, thereby increasing their income potential.
