Kuching: The Sarawak government is taking significant steps to transform the southern region of the state, specifically Samarahan, into a modern low-carbon city. This initiative aligns with goals for public health improvement and environmental sustainability, as articulated by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at a recent groundbreaking ceremony for Boulevard Samarahan.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Tan Sri Abang Johari emphasized the importance of data-driven development planning, which allows for more precise and strategically directed growth. The comprehensive plans are designed to benefit future generations, particularly in the regions of Samarahan, Kuching, and Serian. One of the primary focuses of the development is the creation of large-scale green areas, which will include the planting of various species of tropical trees. These areas are intended not only to attract tourists but also to serve as research centers.
In his speech, Abang Johari disclosed that approximately 405 hectares in the Samarahan area have been earmarked as green zones. These zones will be populated with native Sarawak hardwoods such as belian and are protected from commercial or residential development. Any proposed developments in these areas must receive approval from the State Legislative Assembly.
He further stated that the construction of the Boulevard Samarahan marks just the beginning of this ambitious project. The area is expected to evolve into a recreational space, offering facilities similar to the State Library and Reservoir Park, where residents can enjoy activities like jogging in a healthier, cleaner environment. The initiative reflects the Sarawak government's commitment to fostering sustainable urban environments.
