Sabah Polls: Shafie Confirmed No Meeting With Any Political Party Leader

Kota kinabalu: PartI Warisan (Warisan) president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal confirmed that he has not met any political party leaders following the results of the 17th Sabah state election yesterday, which saw Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) win 29 state constituencies.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohd Shafie, who defended his Senallang seat, stated that he would only meet with political party leaders involved at the Sabah State Legislative Assembly sitting. “No…I’ve already slept…I’m tired of campaigning for days and I’ve been working for more than four years. In this election, I haven’t met with any party leaders,” he said. This statement was made when he was asked about the possibility of forming a coalition of political parties to govern the Sabah state government.

In his first press conference after the election, Mohd Shafie detailed that Warisan secured 25 state seats compared to 29 for GRS, while Barisan Nasional secured 6, Independent 5, Pakatan Harapan 1, Perikatan Nasional 1, UPKO 3, STAR 2, and KDM 1. Following the announcement from the Election Commission (EC), GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor was sworn in as Sabah Chief Minister for the second term in a ceremony at Istana Seri Kinabalu at about 3 am.

When questioned about Warisan’s readiness to become the opposition after the election results, Mohd Shafie mentioned that his party was assessing the situation based on the early stages of the formation of the Sabah government after the 2020 election. “We will see, because I knew that the GRS government with BN would not last long. I mean there are always dynamics in politics in this state,” he remarked.

Furthermore, Mohd Shafie expressed appreciation to the Chinese community in Sabah for the significant increase in support for Warisan, despite eight DAP candidates losing in the election.
