Sabah Government Plans Major Infrastructure Upgrades in Semporna to Boost Growth

Kota kinabalu: The Sabah government is formulating plans to upgrade critical supporting infrastructure in Semporna to support the sector's continued growth. Chief Minister Hajiji Noor announced initiatives to modernize jetty facilities and logistics networks, develop a comprehensive cold chain system for marine produce preservation, expand international export market access, and provide world-class tourism facilities.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Hajiji highlighted that tourism hotspots like Pulau Mabul and Pulau Kapalai face pressure from rapid development and increased visitor density, necessitating sustainable management. He emphasized sustainability as an investment, not a burden, and stressed the importance of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles in guiding development.

Hajiji outlined Semporna's potential as a world-class sustainable marine tourism hub, a modern aquaculture center, and a leading premium seafood producer. He underscored the need for strong grassroots leadership and commitment to sustainability principles for the success of the broader development agenda.

Local leaders are urged to act as 'guardians' of the ecosystem, assisting in enforcement efforts, curbing unsustainable activities, leading community awareness campaigns, and encouraging youth participation in the Blue Economy sector. Hajiji noted that initiatives like the daily visitor quota system at Sipadan Island serve as models for sustainable tourism management.

The government is also intensifying efforts to transform the marine aquaculture sector into a value-added economy, with priorities including the expansion of integrated aquaculture zones, introduction of modern sea cage technology, and support for seaweed entrepreneurs. Efforts to attract high-impact investments in marine product processing are underway to ensure control over the economic value chain.
