RM9 Million Allocated for Melaka’s Aquaculture Development

Melaka: The federal government, through the Melaka government, has allocated RM9 million to develop the aquaculture industry in the state, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh. He emphasized that this initiative aims to assist fishermen affected by coastal development in Melaka while driving the growth of the state’s aquaculture sector.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Chief Minister Ab Rauf Yusoh recently attended the National Finance Council Meeting, where Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim approved the RM9 million allocation through the Finance Ministry secretary-general. This financial support is intended for the development of the aquaculture industry, focusing on the farming of species such as cockles, sea bass, mussels, and clams. The government will collaborate with fishermen’s associations to identify the affected fishermen and determine suitable areas for aquaculture development.

The Chief Minister highlighted that the aquaculture industry holds significant potential to generate returns for operators while contributing to the country’s food security. In addition to this initiative, RM1.43 million has already been distributed to 438 fishermen in Melaka and Negeri Sembilan affected by the Kuala Linggi International Port (KLIP) development. The ex gratia payment, currently in its third phase, has benefited fishermen from Alor Gajah, Port Dickson, and inland areas in Alor Gajah.

The state government has also committed to expediting the ex gratia payments for 2025, demonstrating their dedication to supporting the welfare of fishermen impacted by the KLIP development. The Chief Minister expressed hope that this assistance would help the recipients prepare for Syawal, allowing them to celebrate Hari Raya more joyfully.
