RM2.6 Billion Required for Kuching Flood Mitigation Projects: Fadillah

Kuching: The Federal Government estimates that RM2.6 billion is needed to complete two major flood mitigation (RTB) initiatives in Kuching, covering Phase 2 of the Kuching City RTB and the Sungai Samariang RTB, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. Fadillah, who also serves as the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, stated that the plans are now awaiting Cabinet approval.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the proposal initially included only Phase Two of the Kuching RTB. However, following the state government's request, the scope was expanded to include the Samariang project, aiming for an integrated approach to water flow management. The total cost is expected to reach RM2.6 billion, ensuring the Samariang area remains unaffected by urban water flows due to the interconnected drainage system.

Fadillah highlighted that the RM191 million Sarawak River Integrated Basin Development Project (PLSB) is already underway. This project includes flood mitigation efforts at Sungai Gersik and Sungai Sinjan, along with river deepening in Matang, and is expected to be completed by October 2027. The PLSB scheme aims to protect over 22,000 residents from flooding in the capital once fully operational.

Additionally, Fadillah announced the completion of the RM97.2 million Phase 3 Sibu RTB, which was officially handed over to the Sarawak state government. Future plans include seeking state funding for the RM120 million Phase 4 and federal funds for the RM474 million Phase 5.

Fadillah also mentioned that the RM10 million Stakan flood mitigation project, designed to address flash floods along the Kuching-Samarahan border, was completed and handed over in August 2024.
