Putrajaya: Putrajaya Corporation (PPj) has decided not to proceed with the planned trackless tram or Automated Rail Transit (ART) system in Putrajaya due to prohibitive costs, as announced to the Dewan Rakyat today.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Lo Su Fui revealed that preliminary studies indicate the estimated cost for implementing the ART system, which includes infrastructure development, systems, operations, and maintenance, would amount to RM211.95 million over the next decade.
"This cost is beyond the financial capacity of PPj as the local authority. On this basis, PPj will not proceed with the ART implementation in Putrajaya, and there are no plans to expand the line in the next phase," Lo stated while responding to an inquiry from Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa (PH-Sekijang).
Despite this decision, Lo mentioned that PPj remains open to future public transport planning, contingent on financial capacity and allocation approvals, aiming to achieve a 70 percent public transport usage target.
Regarding alternative financing models, such as public-private partnerships to fund implementation costs, Lo emphasized that decisions are based on comprehensive evaluations of costs, benefits, risks, and the current fiscal capacity.
To alleviate traffic congestion in Putrajaya, PPj has initiated measures such as operating NadiPutra buses on seven daily routes and introducing water taxis.
