Prosecution Moves to Forfeit Assets Tied to Ex-Army Chief’s Family

Kuala lumpur: The prosecution has taken steps to seize assets including a luxury vehicle and jewellery linked to the wife and sister-in-law of former Army Chief Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the prosecution filed an application at the High Court on May 4, targeting Salwani Anuar @ Kamaruddin, the 27-year-old wife of the former Army Chief, as the respondent. The assets in question include a Range Rover Sport SVR, a 916-gold bracelet weighing 15.10 grammes, and three gold rings with weights of 1.33 grammes, 1.41 grammes, and 1.35 grammes, respectively. Additionally, a pair of gold earrings weighing 6.640 grammes, worth approximately RM10,930, was also seized.

These assets were confiscated under Section 45(2) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001, and are currently held by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission. Deputy Public Prosecutor Natrah Fareha Rahmat noted that the court has scheduled May 19 for the case mention.

In a related development, Deputy Public Prosecutor Mahadi Abdul Jumaat informed Sessions Court Judge Rosli Ahmad that an application had been filed to seize 23 Rolex watches and 15 pieces of jewellery from Hafizuddeain's sister-in-law, Nor Shahira Atirah Anuar @ Kamaruddin. Mahadi stated that a gazette notice would be published to summon any interested parties to court, as per Section 41(2) of the MACC Act 2009.

Lawyer Aizul Rohan Anuar confirmed that the defence does not oppose the prosecution's application. The court has set June 26 for another case mention to allow third-party attendance.

The prosecution, following Section 41(1) of the MACC Act in conjunction with Section 376 of the Criminal Procedure Code, is pushing for the forfeiture of these assets. They allege that the items were acquired through means linked to an offence under Section 165 of the Penal Code.
