Prime Minister Anwar Emphasizes Governance Standards for Bumiputera and Islamic Institutions

Putrajaya:Parliament Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for government-linked institutions tasked with protecting the interests of the Bumiputera community and Muslims to exemplify good governance. He emphasized the importance of integrity, transparency, and accountability in their management.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar stressed the need for these institutions to adhere to stringent governance standards to effectively fulfill their responsibilities. He highlighted that the mandate to protect specific groups should not excuse management weaknesses or practices that contradict good governance principles.

Anwar addressed the role of government-linked investment companies (GLICs) and government-linked companies (GLCs) in safeguarding the interests of the Bumiputera community and, in certain cases, Muslims. He stated that even though these entities are wholly government-owned, they must rigorously apply governance principles. He expressed concern over the perception that institutions associated with the Bumiputera community or Islam might have inferior governance compared to other companies.

During the Minister's Question Time session in the Dewan Rakyat, Anwar responded to questions from Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (MUDA-Muar) regarding the responsible management of GLIC investment funds. He also addressed Syahredzan Johan's (PH-Bangi) inquiry about the role of GLICs and GLCs in promoting development and public welfare, emphasizing their duty to consider national priorities in their operations.

Anwar clarified misconceptions about Petronas' mandate, noting its involvement in Putrajaya Holdings and its contributions to the development of Putrajaya. He underscored the broader scope of GLICs and GLCs, including their participation in projects that benefit the public and support long-term national development, such as housing for Malaysian students abroad.

He further mentioned the Kota MADANI initiative in Putrajaya aimed at providing accommodation for civil servants and highlighted the impact of the Kampung Angkat MADANI and Sekolah Angkat MADANI programs, benefiting numerous villages and schools through collaboration with GLICs and private companies.
