Prasarana Introduces RVMs At LRT Stations To Support Sustainable Urban Mobility

Kuala lumpur: Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) today introduced the use of Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) at high-traffic Light Rail Transit (LRT) stations as part of the company's initiative to support the development of sustainable urban mobility.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prasarana Group Chief Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Sustainable Development Officer Idzqandar Abu Bakar stated that the installation of RVMs at busy rail stations such as the Masjid Jamek Station and KLCC Station aligns with the Prasarana Sustainability Roadmap, which aims for a recycling rate of 30 per cent by 2030. The technology is designed to provide a convenient recycling facility, thereby encouraging recycling practices among public transport passengers and the urban community.

He highlighted that this strategy not only simplifies the recycling process but also promotes positive behavioral change through smart technology and reward systems. Among the machines introduced is KLEAN, powered by artificial intelligence to accept plastic bottles and cans. Users who recycle these materials will earn reward points via the Klean mobile application, which can be redeemed for vouchers from selected partner merchants such as Zus Coffee, Grab, and Jaya Grocer.

Additionally, the ATLAS ECOPOD recycling machine was introduced, integrated with ATLAS Vending machines to allow users to recycle and receive digital rewards that can be redeemed directly at the adjacent vending machines. Both machines are equipped with data tracking systems to monitor user engagement and the volume of recyclable materials, supporting data-driven sustainability initiatives.

So far, 16 units of RVMs have been installed at facilities operated by Prasarana, including Menara Prasarana and the headquarters of Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd. Prasarana also invited strategic collaborations and private sector sponsorships for the installation of RVMs at selected rail stations, in line with the aspirations of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable city.
