Possibility of Early General Election Looms Amid Political Tensions, Says Anwar

Johor bahru: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has suggested the possibility of dissolving Parliament to conduct the 16th general election (GE16) earlier than scheduled if coalition partners in the Unity Government persist in actions that undermine political stability.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar, who also serves as the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman, expressed this stance following the decision by UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) to contest all seats in Johor. Anwar emphasized that if coalition partners choose to "fight" and dissolve their ties, he is prepared to return the mandate to the people, allowing them to decide the future leadership of the country.

Anwar articulated his concerns during his address at the PH 2026 Convention held at the Johor Persada International Convention Centre. He highlighted the need for imminent discussions with PH leadership to consider the situation seriously. He questioned if the current fragmentation within the government could lead to the decision to hold a nationwide general election.

The Prime Minister noted that while the final decision on the date of the GE remains his prerogative, he would consult with PH leadership before making any significant moves. He warned that PH is prepared to field candidates in all seats across Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Melaka, Penang, and Pahang if political negotiations reach a stalemate.

Anwar reiterated the readiness of PH to contest in all areas within these states and mentioned ongoing discussions with his allies to determine their preparedness for an immediate general election. Despite these tensions, Anwar emphasized his commitment to maintaining political stability for the country's economic prosperity.

He stressed the importance of a patient approach to safeguarding the country's future while being firm in response to any threats. Anwar called upon the PH machinery to remain vigilant and unafraid of facing potential elections soon to uphold the party's principles and struggle.
