SEPANG: Police are investigating the cause of a foreigner’s sudden death while in custody at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 police station here last Saturday. Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan stated that the man, in his 30s, was arrested around 1.30pm after exhibiting aggressive behavior and harassment at KLIA Terminal 1.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the arrest was carried out by police from the Main Terminal Building (MTB) Police Station at KLIA Police Headquarters. During the arrest, the individual acted aggressively, causing damage to police property and injuring two policemen and an auxiliary officer. The man, who was traveling from the United Kingdom to Phuket, Thailand, with a transit at KLIA, was detained under Sections 427, 323, and 186 of the Penal Code.
Hussein reported that the man became unconscious during the documentation process, prompting police to seek assistance from the KLIA medical team. Despite initial treatment by doctors, the man was pronoun
ced dead. An autopsy was performed at Sultan Idris Shah Hospital in Serdang, but the cause of death remains undetermined, pending laboratory results.
The case has been classified as a sudden death, and the Bukit Aman Integrity and Standard Compliance Department’s Criminal Investigation and Death in Custody Unit (USJKT) is leading the investigation. The matter will be thoroughly investigated before being submitted to the coroner, and it has been referred to the Independent Police Code of Conduct Commission (IPCC) as required by Section 26 of the Independent Police Code of Conduct Act 2022 (Act 839).
