Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s upcoming working visit to South Africa from November 20 to 23 is anticipated to enhance strategic cooperation between the two countries, with a focus on halal management, capacity building, and industry innovation.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar emphasized that the visit reinforces Malaysia’s role as a global halal leader and supports the sustainable development of the global halal ecosystem. Mohd Na’im highlighted the longstanding relations between Malaysia and South Africa in the halal sector, facilitated by the recognition of three South African halal certification bodies by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM). These bodies include the National Independent Halaal Trust in Johannesburg, the South African National Halaal Authority in Kwazulu Natal, and the Muslim Judicial Council Halaal Trust in Cape Town.
Mohd Na’im stated that this recognition underscores the Malaysian government’s commitment to expanding halal assurance globally. He also noted JAKIM’s dedication to sharing its expertise through capacity building, upskilling, and knowledge sharing initiatives, aligning with Malaysia’s goal of strengthening the international halal network.
In addition to focusing on the halal sector, Anwar’s visit, upon the invitation of President Cyril Ramaphosa, the G20 president for 2025, will involve engagement sessions with local Islamic leaders to discuss collaboration in enhancing ummah development worldwide. The Prime Minister is currently continuing his tour of the African continent, with South Africa being the second stop of his journey in conjunction with the G20 Leaders’ Summit.
