PM Term Limit Proposal Advances Political Reform Agenda in Malaysia

Kuala lumpur: The proposal to limit the prime minister's tenure to a maximum of 10 years or two full terms is seen as a pivotal step toward fostering a political culture that is transparent, progressive, and democratic. This initiative aims to contribute to the nation's advancement by ensuring accountability and limiting the concentration of power.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, PKR Women's Information Chief Datuk Ginie Lim emphasized that the proposal reflects Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's determination to expedite the implementation of reform promises following years in the opposition. Lim highlighted Anwar's commitment to instigate change while holding office, rather than after stepping down.

Lim noted that during Anwar's three-year leadership, the Unity Government has successfully maintained political stability, driven economic growth, and safeguarded the welfare of the people. She expressed confidence that continued institutional reforms would allow Malaysians to benefit from the nation's growing wealth. Lim further stated that Anwar's leadership deserves continued support to ensure the full implementation of reform agendas, aiming to eradicate systemic decay and corruption for the well-being of the country.

She added that PKR Women fully support the Prime Minister's efforts to reinforce government machinery to be more robust and effective, with high integrity in executing fiscal and economic policies under the Madani Economy framework.

Additionally, DAP Policy Director Datuk Chan Foong Hin welcomed Anwar's commitment to limiting the prime minister's tenure, viewing it as integral to the reform agenda outlined in Pakatan Harapan's manifesto for the 15th General Election (GE15). Chan stated that the proposed constitutional reform is a vital safeguard against excessive power concentration, bolstering democratic accountability at the highest level of national leadership.

Chan also mentioned other institutional reform proposals announced by the Prime Minister, such as the separation of the roles of the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor, the introduction of a Freedom of Information Act, and the establishment of an Ombudsman institution. These initiatives reflect a serious effort to rebuild public trust and ensure governance is conducted with integrity and accountability within a democratic framework.

He highlighted that over the past three years, the MADANI Government has engaged in comprehensive consultations and conducted a mid-term review to prioritize and effectively implement reforms. Chan concluded by urging all lawmakers and stakeholders to collaborate, transcending partisan differences to ensure reforms are carried out transparently and in the best interests of the people and the nation's future.
