Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has congratulated Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairman Tarique Rahman and the party on their emphatic victory in Bangladesh's general election, describing the outcome as a triumph of democracy.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar expressed his congratulations in a Facebook post, highlighting the Bangladeshi people's clear mandate at the ballot box despite facing extraordinary challenges. He also extended his appreciation to Dr. Muhammad Yunus for his role as Chief Adviser during the transition, ensuring the democratic process proceeded smoothly.
Anwar emphasized Malaysia's commitment to enhancing engagement with the new Bangladeshi administration, expressing eagerness to work with the new leadership to invigorate bilateral ties. He conveyed Malaysians' warm regards to the people of Bangladesh.
Foreign media reported that over 127.6 million people in Bangladesh were eligible to vote in the election, which included a referendum on constitutional reforms. The 13th parliamentary election is considered a significant milestone for the nation of 175 million, following the mass uprising in August 2024 that led to the removal of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Tarique Rahman, 60, is the son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia and former president Ziaur Rahman.
