PKPS Adopts FIFO Method To Ensure Fresh Food Stock At GMS

Kuala Lumpur: The Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation (PKPS) has adopted the First In, First Out (FIFO) method to ensure that food supplies stored at the Selangor Food Warehouse (GMS) remain fresh and safe. PKPS Group chief executive officer Datuk Dr Mohamad Khairil Mohamad Razi emphasized the importance of this approach in minimizing spoilage and wastage by ensuring that older products are distributed first.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamad Khairil highlighted that the FIFO system is crucial for maintaining freshness, explaining that it allows for consistent replenishment and sale of stock through the Jualan Ehsan Rahmah (JER) programme. He reassured that the method prevents old food stocks from expiring by ensuring they are used in a timely manner.

Concerns regarding the long-term storage of rice, particularly the risk of weevil infestation or spoilage, were also addressed by Mohamad Khairil. He assured that strict monitoring measures are in place to prevent such issues. He provided examples such as frozen meat, which can last up to two years, but thanks to a partnership with global meat supplier Allanasons Private Limited (Allana), products are rotated swiftly.

Selangor is leading the way in Malaysia as the first state to implement a state-run dedicated food warehouse aimed at bolstering the supply security of essential carbohydrates and proteins, especially during emergencies. PKPS is also considering expanding its protein reserves to include fish and chicken within the next six months, though storage methods are still under study to ensure product freshness.

Finally, Mohamad Khairil expressed gratitude towards the media for their ongoing support, noting its significance in disseminating information about PKPS’ initiatives to the public and building trust.
