Penang Strengthens Management of George Town World Heritage Site After 18 Years

Kuala lumpur: After nearly two decades of being recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Penang is now in a stronger position to manage and preserve George Town due to various efforts undertaken since the recognition on July 7, 2008.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow stated that the 18-year journey was not easy, as the state government faced numerous challenges, especially in the first five years after George Town was recognized as a World Heritage Site. However, he emphasized that continuous efforts involving the implementation of legal provisions, development planning controls, and cooperation among various stakeholders have successfully elevated the management of the heritage site to a more mature level.

Chow elaborated that the state now has established relevant legal provisions, a specific Special Area Plan, and an agency, George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI), to manage the site. He made these remarks at a press conference for the organisation of the George Town Heritage Celebrations (GTHC) 2026 in conjunction with the celebration of George Town's recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Further commenting, Chow mentioned that preservation efforts are supported by cooperation among GTWHI, the Penang State Heritage Commissioner, and the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), alongside support from residents, community, and organizations within the heritage site area. Additionally, community involvement extends beyond George Town to other areas, including Balik Pulau and Seberang Perai, with federal government assistance bolstering the site's management.

Among the initiatives in place is the Climate Change Adaptation Project, funded through the World Bank, aimed at enhancing the resilience of the heritage site against climate change challenges. Chow highlighted that the 18th anniversary of George Town's UNESCO recognition marks a new level of maturity in managing the area, emphasizing the need for a deeper understanding of its value and collective efforts to preserve it.

Meanwhile, GTWHI general manager Dr. Ang Ming Chee revealed that the GTHC 2026 celebration, themed "Share Stories!", will take place from July 4 to 7. The event will showcase various myths, legends, folktales, and sagas that reflect George Town's cultural heritage, featuring a Street Festival as the main programme along with the Historic Building Open House and George Town Heritage City Walk. Over four days, 48 community partners will share their stories and cultural traditions through numerous activities, including cultural workshops, interactive dance performances, and visits to historical buildings.
