Penang: The Penang state government values the important role played by media practitioners as a frontline defence in ensuring the dissemination of accurate, credible and unmanipulated information. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said in an era marked by the rapid expansion of social media, digital technology advancements and artificial intelligence (AI), the role of professional journalists has become increasingly critical in curbing the spread of fake news and maintaining public trust in the information delivered.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Chow emphasized that the duty of journalists is not merely to report events but also to ensure that the public understands the truth through fact-checking processes and sound editorial judgment. He acknowledged journalists as the nation's frontline defence in curbing the spread of fake news, combating the manipulation of facts, and safeguarding the integrity of information. Chow was speaking at the State Government Dinner in conjunction with HAWANA 2026, an event also attended by Penang Governor Tun Ramli Ngah Talib and other dignitaries.
The event saw the presence of Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Penang State Secretary Datuk Seri Zulkifli Long, and other high-ranking officials, highlighting the collaboration between government bodies and media organisations. Notable attendees included the Chairman of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai and various representatives from local and international media organisations.
Chow, who has a background in journalism, shared his personal connection to the field, having served as a sub-editor before entering politics. He reflected on the valuable experience that taught him about the realities and responsibilities faced by media practitioners. He also highlighted the media's role as a strategic partner in Penang's development history, including during significant milestones such as the industrialisation era and the recognition of George Town as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In line with the Penang2030 Vision, Chow reiterated the state government's commitment to delivering transparent, accurate, and inclusive information to all citizens. He noted that HAWANA provides a platform to strengthen collaboration among media practitioners and communication leaders, aiming to enhance understanding, trust, and regional solidarity.
