Penang JPJ Seizes 74 Motorcycles from Unlicensed Foreign Riders

Penang:The Penang Road Transport Department (JPJ) has confiscated 74 motorcycles operated by foreign nationals without valid licences during the Foreign Drivers Operation, known as Ops PeWA, held in the city today.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Penang JPJ director Zulkifly Ismail reported that some foreigners rented motorcycles from local owners at rates as low as RM200 a month for daily use, including commuting to work, despite lacking the necessary driving licences.

The operation, conducted between 5 am and 10 am, involved the inspection of 694 vehicles. It resulted in the seizure of 74 motorcycles and the issuance of 258 summons notices for various offences. Riding without a licence was the most frequent violation, with 158 instances, followed by 50 cases of expired Motor Vehicle Licences.

Zulkifly explained that the seizures were carried out under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987 to prevent further offences. Among those apprehended was a Bangladeshi national in his early 30s, working in construction, who had purchased a Yamaha Y16 motorcycle three days prior to the operation. His motorcycle, registered in his name, was seized due to his lack of a valid licence.

The operation primarily checked foreign nationals working as contract and factory workers from Indonesia, Bangladesh, India, and Myanmar. Zulkifly emphasized the responsibility of employers, vehicle owners, and agents to ensure that foreign drivers possess valid licences and proper documentation before operating any vehicles.

He also urged locals to exercise caution when renting or lending vehicles to foreign nationals, as many of them do not hold valid driving documents or licences.
