Kuala lumpur: Penang, Johor, Selangor, Sarawak, and Kuala Lumpur were the primary contributors to Malaysia's export performance, collectively accounting for 88.9 percent of the country's total exports in April 2026, as reported by the Statistics Department Malaysia (DOSM).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Export-Import Statistics by State report for April 2026, released by DOSM, indicated that exports in that month reached RM182.7 billion, marking a substantial increase from RM154 billion in the same period last year. This represents a year-on-year rise of RM49.2 billion. Penang emerged as the leading exporter, contributing 45.1 percent, followed by Johor at 19.7 percent, Selangor at 14.6 percent, Sarawak at 5.3 percent, and Kuala Lumpur at 4.2 percent.
The increase in export figures was notably driven by higher exports in Penang, which saw an increase of RM33.5 billion, Johor with RM9.7 billion, Kuala Lumpur at RM3.5 billion, Selangor with RM2.5 billion, and Sarawak at RM490.1 million. Other states contributing to the export growth included Perak, Terengganu, Sabah, Perlis, and Negeri Sembilan.
Conversely, some states experienced a decline in exports. Pahang saw a decrease of RM573.5 million, Labuan by RM289.1 million, Kedah by RM188.6 million, Melaka by RM158.2 million, and Kelantan by RM11.8 million.
In terms of imports, April 2026 saw an increase of 20 percent, reaching RM25.6 billion. The rise in imports was attributed to higher figures in several states, including Johor, which increased by RM18.6 billion, Penang by RM9.6 billion, and Sarawak by RM517.6 million. Other contributors to the import surge were Perak, Kedah, Labuan, Sabah, Terengganu, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, and Perlis.
However, imports declined in Selangor by RM2 billion, Kuala Lumpur by RM1.3 billion, Kelantan by RM27.1 million, and Melaka by RM8.0 million. Johor stood out as the dominant state for imports, with a share of 28 percent, followed by Penang at 25.3 percent, Selangor at 23.4 percent, Kuala Lumpur at 7.8 percent, and Kedah at 4.4 percent.
