Penang: Penang has banned the sale of toys that use medical devices such as syringes, including a product known as the 'squeeze acne toy needle tube pinch music injection bubble', due to safety risks to children.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, State Local Government and Town and Country Planning Committee chairman H'ng Mooi Lye said monitoring by his team found that the toys were being sold openly in the market, including at night markets, business premises, and online platforms. H'ng highlighted receiving complaints from parents about the widespread availability of these toys, which were confirmed to be sold at RM5 per unit, complete with a syringe. This issue raises concerns due to the categorization of syringes as medical devices, which are subject to strict regulatory requirements.
At a press conference at his office in Komtar, H'ng emphasized the potential health risks such as infections and misuse associated with the free sale of syringes, particularly concerning children. He stressed that needle devices must only be distributed through registered and licensed channels, adhering to safety and sterility standards.
H'ng also announced that local authorities, including the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP), will enforce strict measures, such as seizures and fines, against traders who defy the ban. Business licenses could also be revoked for non-compliance. The authorities will perform daily checks to ensure compliance and will collaborate with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living to address online sales.
In a bid to safeguard public health, H'ng urged parents and guardians to refrain from purchasing these toys and to monitor their children's activities both at physical stores and online platforms.
