Penang Ferry Service Records 7.28% Increase in First Half of 2026

Penang: Passenger ferry services in Penang continued to record positive developments throughout the first half of this year with an increase of 7.28 per cent compared to the same period last year.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Penang Port Commission (SPPP) Chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin reported that for the month of June alone, total ferry traffic recorded a total of 262,424 users involving 199,861 pedestrians, 622 cyclists, and 61,941 motorcycles.

"These statistics clearly show the continued demand for ferry services as the main public transport in the state and SPPP also providing free ferry services on recent festive days," Yeoh stated in a recent announcement. "The initiative not only facilitates the movement of residents and visitors, but also provides the public with an opportunity to experience Penang ferries, thus raising awareness of the importance of public services."

Yeoh further emphasized that the ferry service continues to serve as an important link for multi-racial communities, involving passengers from various states and countries with a variety of users. This strengthens the role of ferries in supporting the local economy, promoting local culture, and encouraging the exchange of social experiences and domestic tourism.

In light of these developments, Yeoh expressed his hopes that the momentum of the increase will continue to be strengthened through continuous improvement efforts alongside wider promotions to attract more users.
