Kuching: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) should take lessons from the political journeys of the Indian National Congress in India and the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in Japan, said PBB president Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. The Sarawak Premier highlighted that while both parties were once dominant in their respective countries, they are now facing challenges in maintaining public support.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abang Johari emphasized the importance of PBB remaining open to change to continue its relevance. Founded on April 30, 1973, PBB has led Sarawak for over 50 years. He pointed out that long-standing parties like the Congress Party and LDP are experiencing challenges related to trustworthiness and trust deficits, affecting their public confidence.
Abang Johari further noted that internal party dynamics significantly contribute to a party’s longevity, aside from public support. He acknowledged the established culture of cooperation within PBB, between leaders from the Pesaka and Bumiputera wings. He stressed the importance of young PBB leaders understanding this culture and recognizing that political stability is vital.
PBB consists of two wings: the Bumiputera wing, which includes the Malay/Melanau community, and the Pesaka wing, which comprises the Iban, Bidayuh, and Orang Ulu communities. The 16th PBB General Assembly, attended by more than 4,000 delegates, runs from February 14 to 16.
