Kuala lumpur: PAS has decided not to take part in the Perlis State Executive Council (Exco) to be formed by the newly appointed Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah. In a significant move, PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan announced that all incumbent PAS Exco members will step down from their positions, demonstrating solidarity following the resignation of former Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli last week.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the decision was made after PAS central leadership assessed and deliberated the current political situation concerning the Perlis state government and Perikatan Nasional (PN). Takiyuddin emphasized that despite this decision, PAS remains committed to maintaining its role and presence within the Perlis state government, in line with the mandate given by the people in the 15th General Election (GE15).
Takiyuddin urged all parties to reflect on recent developments, learn from them, and take necessary steps to strengthen public confidence in PN. He also expressed PAS's readiness to lead PN in fortifying the coalition's organization and preparing for upcoming state elections and the 16th General Election.
Furthermore, Takiyuddin reaffirmed PAS's commitment to upholding the rule of law, democratic principles, constitutional monarchy, and the wisdom of the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, for the benefit of the state and its people.
The new Perlis Menteri Besar, Abu Bakar, 57, and Kuala Perlis assemblyman, was sworn in following the voluntary resignation of Mohd Shukri, the Sanglang assemblyman from PAS, on December 25 due to health reasons.
In a related development, PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man announced that a special meeting will be convened soon to decide on a new PN chairman following Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's resignation from the post, effective January 1, 2026. Muhyiddin made this announcement earlier today via a Facebook statement after leading the coalition for five years since its official registration on August 7, 2020.
Several PN leaders have since followed suit, including Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, who will step down as PN secretary-general, also effective January 1, and Johor PN chairman Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal, the Bukit Kepong assemblyman.
