Parties Urged to Reconsider Leaving Barisan Nasional Amid Political Shifts, Says Zahid

Kuala lumpur: Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has cautioned component parties to think carefully before deciding to leave the long-established coalition, warning that political realignments over the next two years could leave some parties disadvantaged. Ahmad Zahid said the political landscape is expected to undergo significant changes ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16), making it crucial for parties to weigh their decisions prudently.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ahmad Zahid expressed confidence that the political landscape will change significantly within the next 24 months leading up to GE16. He highlighted the potential consequences for parties that make decisions not aligned with these changes, warning that they might find themselves in a state of uncertainty. He refrained from naming any specific party while issuing this caution.

Ahmad Zahid, who also holds the position of Deputy Prime Minister, made these remarks after officiating the Indian Progress Front (IPF) general assembly. He noted that BN has not yet received any official letter from the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) regarding its resolution to propose withdrawal from the coalition, and no decision has been made on the matter. Furthermore, he mentioned that there has been no meeting between BN and MIC since the party's 79th Annual General Assembly on November 16.

When questioned about the possibility of accepting IPF as a core component party of BN, Ahmad Zahid stated that such a decision requires unanimous consent among BN component parties, as per the coalition's constitution. He emphasized that due to this constitutional requirement, not only IPF but many other parties have not been accepted as core component parties within BN.
