Pahang Customs Foil E-Waste Smuggling Attempt at Northport

Pahang: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) has successfully disrupted an electronic waste smuggling syndicate, seizing eight containers valued at approximately RM2.15 million during a raid at Northport on February 3. Pahang JKDM Director Mohd Asri Seman explained that the operation followed intelligence gathered by the JKDM Bentong Enforcement Division, in collaboration with the Selangor Department of Environment (DOE).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the eight 40-foot containers originated from Canada (five containers), Spain (two), and Croatia (one) and were seized at the CP-Hold Yard. The containers, carrying about 186,737 kilogrammes of e-waste, were imported without a permit and falsely declared in customs documentation. The importation of e-waste is conditionally prohibited and requires prior approval under Item 54, Part I of the Third Schedule of the Customs (Prohibition on Imports) Order 2023.

Initial inspections revealed discrepancies between the declared items and the actual contents, suggesting an attempt to smuggle e-waste through Malaysia's main entry point. The syndicate allegedly used false declarations, labeling the goods as copper alloy, to bypass scrutiny and the Import Permit requirement.

Mohd Asri emphasized the seriousness of e-waste importation attempts due to their implications for the environment, public health, and national security. The case is under investigation under Section 135(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1967, with offenders facing heavy penalties upon conviction.

In response, JKDM plans to intensify intelligence gathering and enforcement at all entry points to curb smuggling activities. Mohd Asri also highlighted the importance of public cooperation in reporting smuggling activities, including other contraband items, by contacting the Customs Toll-Free Line or the nearest customs office. Informants' identities will remain confidential.
