Labuan: The Labuan Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has reported that an estimated RM528.59 million in property was saved through its fire and rescue operations between January 1 and June 22 this year, highlighting the importance of community fire safety and emergency preparedness.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, JBPM deputy director-general (Development) Datuk Othman Abdullah stated that the department responded to 277 emergency calls during this period. These included 137 fire incidents, 138 rescue operations, and two special service calls, with the estimated losses amounting to RM30.06 million. Othman emphasized the significance of these statistics in underscoring the continual need for serious attention to fire safety and community preparedness.
The new Tanjung Aru Volunteer Fire Brigade (PBS) station was inaugurated by Othman, who described it as more than a mere physical facility. He noted that it reflects JBPM's commitment to strengthening fire safety, enhancing community preparedness, and fostering volunteerism at the grassroots level. This initiative aligns with JBPM's aim to establish 500 volunteer fire brigades nationwide by 2030.
Labuan currently hosts five active volunteer fire brigades located in Tanjung Aru, Kerupang/Nagalang, Gersik/Saguking, Sungai Lada, and Lubok Temiang, with a total of 88 registered volunteers. The Tanjung Aru brigade, established in 2007, consists of 20 members and is equipped with essential firefighting assets, including a Mitsubishi Triton fire vehicle, a chainsaw, pumps, and other firefighting equipment.
Other volunteer brigades in Labuan are similarly equipped with supporting assets such as fibreglass boats to bolster their emergency response capabilities. Othman highlighted that these volunteer fire brigades serve as strategic partners to JBPM in delivering fire prevention awareness, early emergency response, and community services. They complement the department's operational capabilities through continuous training and coordination with nearby fire stations.
In addition, during the ceremony, JBPM distributed fire prevention equipment to Community Fire units and firefighting equipment to the Tanjung Aru Volunteer Fire Brigade to further enhance community capabilities in fire safety and emergency response.
