Over 6,700 Malaysians Benefit from MyIS Komuniti Projects Across the Nation

Kuala lumpur: More than 6,700 individuals from communities nationwide have gained from the Malaysia Social Innovation Programme (MyIS Komuniti), which has successfully executed 67 projects with an allocation of RM13.97 million from 2021 to the previous year.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Science, Technology, and Innovation Minister Datuk Chang Lih Kang emphasized the importance of the initiative, managed by Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia (YIM) since 2015, in promoting technology adoption and enhancing social and economic well-being inclusively and sustainably. He highlighted that integrated aquaponics systems provide communities with sustainable, self-sufficient food production, contributing to improved food security.

Minister Chang, during a visit to the MyIS - Aquaponics Project Site managed by the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (JLJD) in Pasir Panjang, elaborated that the project facilitates technology access and skills development, fostering local economic growth. The RM251,616 allocated for the Pasir Panjang project signifies an investment in innovation that directly benefits the community, offering facilities, technology, and skills training.

The integrated aquaponics system combines aquaculture with hydroponics, utilizing nutrient-rich fish tank water to fertilize plants while recycling it back into the system. This approach optimizes resources, minimizes waste, and supports sustainable farming practices. Moreover, the project incorporates solar-powered systems with Internet of Things (IoT) technology, enabling real-time monitoring of water quality, temperature, and system operations, thereby reducing the risk of losses.

Since mid-2026, the project has successfully harvested over 800 kilogrammes of vegetables, while fish farming remains in the growth phase, with expertise provided by Research Nexus Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). More than 100 members of the Negeri Sembilan JLJD Veterans Association have benefited as recipients and strategic partners, marketing produce directly to consumers or with support from the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA).
