Makkah: Over 600 Malaysian haj pilgrims this season have shown extraordinary dedication by volunteering through the Sahabat Maktab (pilgrim companion) programme, aiming to ensure the smooth conduct of haj operations in the Holy Land. Among them, 180 individuals were selected to assist with the management and welfare of pilgrims across six Muassasah maktabs.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Malaysian Haj Delegation head Mohd Hisham Harun emphasized that the overwhelming response reflects a robust spirit of unity and volunteerism among Malaysian pilgrims. He noted, "This is a very positive development. They come as guests of Allah, but at the same time want to contribute their energy and help ensure the smooth running of haj operations." Despite the lack of financial reward, many see volunteering as an extension of their worship.
The Sahabat Maktab volunteers are crucial, particularly during the masyair operations, which involve the movement of pilgrims from Makkah to Arafah, Muzdalifah, and Mina. Mohd Hisham explained that the volunteers manage pilgrims' movements, guide them to their tents, assist the elderly and less able, and ensure smooth boarding and disembarking from buses. Selection criteria included health, physical fitness, and relevant experience in medical services and religious affairs.
Lawyer Hairul Iswandy Kadai, 47, expressed that serving as a Sahabat Maktab volunteer allows him to contribute to the welfare of Allah's guests. He shared, "I believe worship is not limited to prayers and recitation, but also includes helping others. As long as I have the strength, I want to help in any way needed." His commitment to volunteer work dates back to his student days, and he is eager to continue this spirit in the Holy Land.
Maslinawati Mohamad, Hairul's wife, observed that her husband was already aiding fellow pilgrims even before his official appointment as a volunteer. She noted his skills in CPR and emergency assistance as valuable assets in supporting the needs of pilgrims.
Initiated by Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH), the Sahabat Maktab programme aims to enhance pilgrim management and welfare through the active participation of volunteers among the pilgrims throughout the haj season.
