Kuala Lumpur:A total of 5,681 bullying cases were reported in schools across Malaysia from January to August this year, as revealed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, these cases encompass physical, verbal, non-verbal, and cyberbullying. However, Anwar noted that the actual number might be higher due to some incidents going unreported in an effort to protect schools' reputations.
Prime Minister Anwar emphasized the importance of transparency, urging that such cases should not be concealed. He stressed that victims are suffering and that immediate and decisive action is necessary. He also called on parents to share the responsibility for monitoring their children's education and safety, in addition to the measures already implemented by the Ministry of Education.
The Prime Minister pointed out that despite various safety measures, including increased guidance and counselling staff and authorizing police to enter school premises, the issue persists. He highlighted the need for family involvement, noting that some students feel neglected by their parents and that family responsibility must be a foundational focus.
Furthermore, Anwar mentioned that the government has approved, in principle, a motion to enhance the Syariah Court institution, with further discussions to be held by the Conference of Rulers in the coming weeks.
