Penang:Penang has experienced no human rabies cases since 1975. The Penang State Health Department is maintaining readiness to address any potential instances of the disease.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, there have also been no animal rabies cases detected in the state. State Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen confirmed this during a press conference for the Penang state-level Clean, Smoke-Free Premises Programme at Food Bayana Medan.
Gooi stated that the state government is collaborating with the Department of Veterinary Services to monitor the rabies situation. He urged the public to adhere to Ministry of Health guidelines if bitten by an animal, which includes seeking immediate medical attention to ensure proper examination and treatment.
This vigilance comes in the wake of a tragic incident on September 27, when a 31-year-old man from Kubang Pasu, Kedah, died from rabies after being bitten by a stray dog in August. This was the first human rabies case reported in Kedah since 1998.
