Selangor: The 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) concluded with athletes achieving notable milestones, including breaking several Games and national records during the intense 10-day competition. The 22nd edition of SUKMA, held from August 15 to 24, saw athletes from across Malaysia competing in 37 sports and 368 events, providing a crucial platform to assess the development of the nation's emerging sporting talent.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, athletics emerged as one of the standout sports with several long-standing records shattered. Johor sprinter Danish Iftikhar Muhammad Roslee was a key figure, clocking 20.85 seconds in the men's 200m to set a new Games record. He also played a vital role in Johor's victory in the men's 4x100m relay and clinched the 100m title, culminating in a total of three gold medals and establishing himself as one of the standout sprinting performers of Selangor SUKMA.

Several other Games records were surpassed, including those in the men's 110m hurdles, women's shot put, women's 10,000m, women's 20,000m race walk, and the men's 4x100m relay. This widespread achievement highlights significant improvements across various events, showcasing positive athlete development at the state level.

The swimming pool was another venue for record-breaking performances, with Selangor's Eliza Tan Ai Shen twice breaking the national record in the women's 100m freestyle and setting a new benchmark of 56.78 seconds. Her accomplishment marked her as the first Malaysian female swimmer to swim under 57 seconds in the event. Eliza also secured gold in the women's 200m freestyle with a time of 2:05.26 seconds and broke Games records in the 50m freestyle, 4x100m freestyle, 4x200m freestyle, and 4x100m medley. Her outstanding performance earned her the title of SUKMA 2026's Best Female Athlete.

Pahang's Cheah Zen Hong was named SUKMA 2026's Best Male Athlete after a remarkable performance that included nine gold and one silver medal. He set two Games records in the 10m air pistol and 25m sport pistol events.

In track cycling, Terengganu's women's quartet set a new national record of 4:42.878 seconds in the team pursuit, improving their qualifying time from 4:46.824 seconds and showcasing the significant progress of Malaysia's track cycling athletes.

The record-breaking achievements at SUKMA serve as a measure of performance gains and provide an important benchmark for sporting development at both state and national levels. These accomplishments indicate the potential of young athletes to compete for Malaysia on international stages such as the SEA Games and Asian Games.
