New Perlis Government Formation Hinges on PAS-Bersatu Deal, Say Analysts

Kuala lumpur: A new Perlis state government may still emerge without a state election if PAS and Bersatu reach an agreement to resolve the ongoing political unrest, according to analysts. Universiti Sains Malaysia's Prof Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid suggests that a new government could be achieved if Bersatu agrees to appoint a PAS assemblyman as Menteri Besar. However, he remains skeptical about such an agreement following the resignation of Mohd Shukri Ramli and the declaration of three vacant state seats.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, election analyst Dr. G Manimaran believes that snap elections could be the optimal solution for Perlis, allowing voters to regain their mandate and avoiding a hung assembly that might impair governmental functions. While alternative options exist, political maneuvering could lead to complications, prompting a return to the electorate for stability.

Dr. Jamaei Hamil from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia supports Manimaran's view, suggesting that dissolving the assembly is an option if PAS and Bersatu cannot reach consensus. Likewise, USM's Prof Datuk Dr. Sivamurugan Pandian advocates for by-elections for the vacant seats in Chuping, Bintong, and Guar Sanji to ensure a stable government, despite the high costs and the current term being three years in.

Prof Dr. Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani from Universiti Utara Malaysia concurs, emphasizing the necessity of by-elections for the three vacant seats, declared by the Speaker after terminating the membership of three PAS assemblymen. This move reflects internal issues within PAS, as the assemblymen's rejection of the Menteri Besar led to their positions being vacated, necessitating by-elections.

Perikatan Nasional won 14 state seats in the last general elections, with nine secured by PAS and five by Bersatu, while Pakatan Harapan claimed the Indera Kayangan seat.
