Negeri Sembilan Government Rejects April 19 Proclamation on Yang Dipertuan Besar

Seremban: The Negeri Sembilan government has announced it will not proceed with the gazettement or enforcement of the April 19, 2026 proclamation concerning the position of the Yang Dipertuan Besar. This decision was communicated by the Negeri Sembilan State Secretary's (SUK) office in a statement this evening.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the decision aligns with the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) ruling, which deemed the proclamation invalid and any subsequent gazettement unconstitutional. The state government has adhered to the AGC's position, highlighting that members of the Negeri Sembilan State Executive Council (MMKN) lack the jurisdiction, authority, or power under the Laws of the Constitution of Negeri Sembilan 1959 to make such an announcement.

The SUK office made these remarks in response to statements by Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Ismail Lasim to the media, regarding the MMKN's decision to gazette the proclamation. The state administration has consulted the State Legal Adviser to ensure compliance with current laws and the Constitution of Negeri Sembilan 1959.

The AGC further clarified in a statement that the April 19 proclamation concerning the position of Yang Dipertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir did not meet the mandatory requirements of Article 10 of the state constitution. It emphasized that the Menteri Besar and the MMKN lack unilateral authority to depose or declare the office of the Yang Dipertuan Besar vacant.

Furthermore, the Negeri Sembilan Dewan Keadilan dan Undang (DKU) has reiterated that Tuanku Muhriz remains the legitimate Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan and chairman of the DKU.
