National Service Training Programme Emphasizes Character Development Over Military Drills

Sabah:The National Service Training Programme (PLKN) 3.0 is not characterized by rigorous military-style training, reassuring potential trainees that they need not fear participation, according to the National Service Training Department (JLKN) Trainee Management Division director, Col Mazlizan Shaikh Osman.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Col Mazlizan explained that military elements constitute less than 10% of the training. Instead, the focus is on physical endurance activities and character development, including obstacle courses, abseiling, navigation, survival skills, and handling M16 rifles. These activities aim to enhance patriotism, unity, discipline, and resilience among young people.

The programme is a government initiative that incorporates special modules from various agencies, such as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the Home Ministry (KDN), and Akademi Kepimpinan Malaysia. Results from previous training series indicate that over 80% of trainees found the programme beneficial, with more than 90% of parents giving positive feedback.

At the Sabah RELA Training Centre Camp, 165 male and 80 female trainees registered for the 45-day programme, which will conclude with a passing-out parade on November 16. This camp, the only one in Borneo, accommodates both male and female trainees, while the other seven camps across the nation separate them by gender.

The registration process includes administrative tasks, distribution of clothing, and haircuts for male trainees, who are expected to have their hair cut three times during the training. Trainees, born in 2008, are selected randomly through a balloting system under the National Service Training Act 2003, though deferments are available for those with valid reasons. Voluntary registration is open to youths aged 17 to 25, including those with higher education degrees.

Completion of the programme offers special merit for trainees applying to the Public Service Commission (SPA), Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF), Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), judicial and legal fields, and the education sector. Those less academically inclined will be directed to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions based on their interests. Additionally, a Career Exploration Programme will provide exposure to career opportunities through government agencies and uniformed bodies.
