National Registration Department Plays Crucial Role in Preserving Malaysian Identities

Kuala Lampur:According to BERNAMA News Agency, the National Registration Department (JPN) is tasked with more than just managing identification documents; it preserves the life records and identities of Malaysians across generations, as stated by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. This responsibility is highlighted by the registration of over 2.03 million births and 968,355 deaths from 2022 to September 15 this year.

JPN has also recorded 23,170 adoption registrations and manages more than 25 million MyKad holders. Essential life events, from birth and marriage to death, are documented by the department, which maintains nearly 500 million physical population records dating back to the first birth records in Penang in 1869.

The department's effectiveness is measured not only by transaction volume but also by how it ensures service access for those in need, including those in remote areas, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. JPN handled 55,788 late birth registration applications nationwide between 2022 and September 15 and resolved issues for 12,101 students through the Menyemai Kasih Rakyat (MEKAR) Didik Programme since November 2024.

JPN operates 211 offices and conducts outreach initiatives to provide services to those unable to visit in person. Saifuddin emphasized the importance of identity documents, like birth certificates and identity cards, as they carry significant meaning for children's lives and futures. He stressed that JPN must remain an efficient institution, using technology while maintaining a personal touch and ensuring legal compliance in all its activities.
