National Library Expands Braille and Audiobook Offerings for Visually Disabled

Accra:The National Library is enhancing access to knowledge for individuals with visual disabilities by providing 85 Braille reading titles and 103 audiobook titles, as announced by its director-general, Edy Irwan Zulkafli.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, this initiative demonstrates the library's commitment to ensuring access to information for all, regardless of ability, and aligns with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4 on quality education and Goal 10 on reducing inequalities. Edy Irwan emphasized that the library is not just about lending books but about creating opportunities for learning without limitations.

As an authorized entity under the Marrakesh Treaty, the National Library is dedicated to increasing the availability of accessible reading materials to aid those with visual disabilities in gaining information and benefiting from educational opportunities. This was highlighted during the 2026 One Day with Persons with Disabilities Programme, an event coinciding with World White Cane Day on October 15, which included various competitions and activities since last August.

Among the activities was the Story Behind the Reading competition, which was won by Mohd Uwais Mohd Hazril Munir @ Umar, a 20-year-old University of Malaya student with dyslexia. His narrative video highlighted the importance of societal support for individuals with learning difficulties. Despite the challenges of creating the video on a tight schedule, Mohd Uwais conveyed a message of community support and hoped for continued assistance for those facing reading difficulties in Malaysia.
