Kuala lumpur: Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who has been incarcerated at Kajang Prison since August 23, 2022, for the misappropriation of RM42 million in SRC International Sdn Bhd funds, has been granted the opportunity to serve the remaining duration of his sentence under house arrest. This decision follows a conditional pardon granted by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the conditional pardon was determined during the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya at Istana Negara. Najib's house arrest is contingent upon his payment of a RM50 million fine, allowing him to remain under house arrest until August 23, 2028.

The SRC International case has been a significant legal journey for Najib, beginning on July 4, 2018, when he was initially charged with criminal breach of trust and power abuse involving RM42 million. The trial commenced on April 3, 2019, after the High Court dismissed Najib's application to declare the charges defective. On July 28, 2020, Najib was sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined RM210 million.

Throughout the proceedings, Najib sought to overturn his conviction and sentence through numerous appeals, applications for new evidence, and petitions for a royal pardon. These legal maneuvers culminated in the recent conditional pardon granted by Sultan Ibrahim, which now allows Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence from home, pending the substantial monetary fine set by the Pardons Board.
