Johor bahru: More than 2.5 tonnes of edible surplus food from Ramadan bazaars have been redistributed, benefitting nearly 4,000 recipients across Johor through the MySaveFood programme.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Yayasan Johor Corporation (Yayasan JCorp) chief executive officer Datuk Mizan Yahya stated that the initiative collected unsold food from bazaars in multiple locations, including Johor Bahru, Kulai, Segamat, Batu Pahat, Mersing, Kota Tinggi, Muar, and Renggam. The food was then distributed to asnaf communities and B40 households, including residents in Public Housing Programme (PPR) areas. This approach ensures that surplus food is fully utilised while easing the burden on those in need and raising public awareness on responsible food management.
Mizan emphasized that food waste is not only an environmental concern but also a matter of societal behaviour. The programme ensures that edible surplus is put to good use rather than ending up as waste. He further highlighted that the initiative demonstrates the significant impact multi-party collaboration can have on communities and the environment.
In addition to redistribution, the programme also focuses on educating the public and bazaar traders about the importance of reducing food waste, particularly during periods of high demand like Ramadan. To enhance management, the initiative employs a mobile application to record collected food, categorise items, and track distribution to recipients.
The MySaveFood initiative in Johor is implemented in partnership with Yayasan JCorp, Pemuda Gema Malaysia, and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), with volunteer support from Gerakan Pengguna Siswa and several corporate partners.
