Kuala Lampur:Malaysia is evaluating the introduction of copyright law provisions allowing creators to opt out of having their works used for data mining, including for artificial intelligence (AI) training.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) director-general, Yusnieza Syarmila Yusoff, stated that this opt-out mechanism is a crucial consideration in the nation's ongoing review of its copyright framework to keep up with technological advancements.
Yusnieza, speaking at a media forum, mentioned that MyIPO has engaged with stakeholders to understand the implications of tech companies using copyrighted works as AI training data. The review focuses on two main AI-related copyright issues: the use of works as input and the ownership status of AI-generated output.
The review also addresses the scope of permitted use for data mining, specifying the types, purposes, and volume limits of accessible content. Yusnieza emphasized the importance of balancing copyright protection with fostering a conducive environment for technology, trade, and investment.
She further noted that the development of the new legal framework involves detailed studies and discussions with stakeholders to ensure it is both user-friendly and supportive of intellectual property rights without hindering technological progress.
