Kuala lumpur: Malaysia’s complete genome database is expected to be ready by end-2028 under the MyGenom project, said Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang. He highlighted that genome sequences for 2,400 healthy individuals will be available from March 2026, with data access to be tightly regulated by a Data Access Committee to ensure ethical and secure use.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister Chang made these remarks during the committee-stage winding-up of the 2026 Supply Bill in the Dewan Rakyat. He elaborated that all applications for data access will undergo meticulous screening and evaluation to maintain data integrity and ethical standards.
Launched on August 29, 2024, MyGenom is a collaborative effort between MOSTI and the Health Ministry aimed at sequencing Malaysian genomes, producing a national reference genome, and mapping genetic variations. The initiative is set to generate a comprehensive genomic dataset reflecting the country’s genetic makeup, thereby supporting Malaysia’s transition toward precision medicine.
Additionally, Chang announced that the Malaysian Research Accelerator for Technology and Innovation (MRANTI) will introduce a RM10 million commercialisation fund next year. Applications for this fund will open in the first quarter of 2026, targeting support for at least 10 high-impact, technology-ready projects.
The Dewan Rakyat later approved MOSTI’s RM1.276 billion operating and development budget for 2026, with Parliament set to resume sitting tomorrow.
