Kuala Lampur:The mother of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir testified at the Coroner's Court, revealing that she was both a mother and friend to her daughter, who often shared her personal matters with her.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Noraidah Lamat, aged 46, explained that her relationship with her daughter was exceptionally close, as she was Zara Qairina's main confidante. Discussing school troubles, amusing incidents, and daily life challenges, Zara Qairina turned to her mother for support and guidance.
Noraidah further testified that she had been responsible for all aspects of Zara Qairina's upbringing, including her schooling and welfare, due to the father's frequent absence because of work commitments in Sipitang. She emphasized that she never observed any serious emotional issues during Zara Qairina's primary school years, and she would always offer encouragement when her daughter faced disappointments.
Zara Qairina was enthusiastic about attending boarding school and was keen on experiencing independent living. Her mother supported her decision, helping with preparations and necessities for the hostel. Zara Qairina passed away on July 17, 2025, at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, a day after being found unconscious at her school hostel.
During the inquest, Noraidah addressed allegations that she caused her daughter's distress, denying any evidence of such issues throughout Zara Qairina's life. She described her daughter as active and spirited, participating in various school activities without showing signs of depression or self-harm.
Noraidah also responded to questions about 15 sheets of paper linked to her daughter's journal, which contained negative remarks about her. She stated that these did not match her daughter's character and expressed disbelief about their contents.
The proceedings highlighted the emotional impact of social media accusations against Noraidah, which labeled her an 'evil mother.' She has taken measures to protect her wellbeing by avoiding such posts and sharing them with her lawyer. The inquest will continue with Noraidah as the witness.
