Mother of Zara Qairina Challenges Diary Entries in Coroner’s Court

Rabat:The mother of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir disputed the authenticity of several diary entries expressing hatred towards her, stating in the Coroner's Court that she had never seen her daughter write such things.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Noraidah Lamat, 46, disagreed with the suggestion that the entries were definitively Zara Qairina's, arguing that anyone could have written them.

During questioning by Inquest Conducting Officer Nahra Dollah, Noraidah rejected the idea that diary entries bearing the phrase "Aku benci ibu" (I hate mother) reflected her daughter's feelings. She insisted, "I disagree because I have never seen Zara Qairina's writing like this," before Coroner Amir Shah Amir Hassan, in the inquest into the teenager's death.

When it was suggested that only Zara Qairina would have reason to write such words, Noraidah maintained that she knew her daughter and did not rule out the possibility that someone else wrote the entries. She also disagreed with the notion that another entry, which included her name and the words "tidak payah melahirkan aku" (you didn't have to give birth to me), expressed her daughter's feelings.

Noraidah acknowledged the entry used abusive language but insisted it was not in her daughter's handwriting. When asked if Zara Qairina's friends might have written the entry, Noraidah stated she had not been informed of any issues or resentment from her daughter's friends.

She confirmed that Zara Qairina habitually kept a diary, mostly documenting friendships and daily life, but had never read entries containing negative feelings towards her, as seen in the proceedings.

Zara Qairina died at Queen Elizabeth Hospital on July 17, 2025, a day after being found unconscious near a drain at her school hostel at 4 am. The inquest is set to resume on October 12.
