Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) has been directed to initiate immediate discussions with the Ministry of Finance (MOF) to develop targeted strategies aimed at mitigating the effects of escalating diesel prices on the tourism transport sector. The initiative, as stated by Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, comes in response to feedback from associations and industry stakeholders who have been affected by rising operational costs.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the consultations will focus on assessing the current situation and exploring targeted measures, including temporary assistance to alleviate short-term pressures, which are partly influenced by developments in the Middle East. Tiong highlighted that the ministry is actively monitoring the impact of rising diesel prices, which pose a potential threat to the tourism transport sector.
Tiong emphasized that if the issue is not adequately addressed, it could have a cascading effect on inbound tourism, businesses, and the overall stability of the tourism ecosystem. He further mentioned that the tourism transport sector is a crucial component of the nation's tourism industry and needs to be reinforced in terms of safety standards, vehicle performance, and service quality for visitors.
The government plans to implement a "stabilize and upgrade" strategy to assist operators in navigating the current challenges, while also promoting gradual improvements such as vehicle renewal, appropriate financial support, and enhancements to the regulatory framework. Tiong stated that any support provided would be aimed at the long-term development of the industry, rather than serving as a temporary solution.
Furthermore, Tiong reiterated the government's objective to not only mitigate the immediate impact but to establish a more resilient and competitive tourism transport system. He encouraged industry players to remain engaged with the government and participate in dialogue rationally to ensure sector stability, particularly in light of the upcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
Tiong expressed optimism that all parties would maintain calm and act prudently, affirming the government's commitment to balancing various interests in pursuit of reasonable solutions and appropriate implementation.
